As British Columbia’s primary electric distribution utility, BC Hydro serves 1.8 million customers and employs nearly 6,000 staff, including business units whose primary functions are the procurement of goods and services, and management of the supply chain.

The Challenge

In the fall of 2011, the Office of the Chief Procurement Officer identified the need for procurement training, to promote fairness, consistency, and transparency in their public procurement process. Their challenges were threefold: 1) increased cost pressures called for maximum efficiency in training, 2) the content had to be in a condensed format due to limited staff availability, and 3) the skill level of the participant group would vary greatly.

The Procurement School Response

In order to meet the unique requirements of the organization, The Procurement School worked closely with one of BC Hydro’s Project Managers to identify precise training needs at all levels.

The Procurement School then developed a modular program covering contract life cycle that incorporates real-life scenarios and case studies, and are supplemented with supporting materials for future reference.

Proven Value

By working closely with BC Hydro to respond to their unique challenges, The Procurement School was able to develop a custom program that was efficient and relevant to a broad spectrum of employees. The supporting materials provided to employees help to keep productivity up, by providing them with quick reference materials that are applicable to their day-to-day activities.

To date, approximately 225 BC Hydro staff members have participated in the program.
